Recently I had the opportunity to chat with Monica Pierre on her show
It was a great conversation
(Which I knew it would be since we hit it off so well when we met in Paris in October)
And during it, she asked me about the person who has most influenced my entrepreneurial journey: my mum
You see, my parents emigrated to London, UK from Nigeria in the early 1980s
As with many immigrant parents, there was a heavy emphasis on education
I think that education was especially important to mum as she didn’t get to take her education further (to degree level) even though she really wanted to
This meant that, when I was younger, she typically worked at least two jobs at a time in order to make ends meet
Mum then clawed her way up by taking the money that she had saved working all those roles and investing in a property
To become a landlady
She would take me along to house viewings, meetings with estate agents and I would help her to clean and get ready for the arrival of new tenants
In addition to that:
She would have very frank discussions with me about her entrepreneurial struggles/woes when it got hard, money and include me in some of the decision-making processes of her business
As I told Monica:
This fostered an interest in entrepreneurship within me at a very young age and my mother remains one of my biggest business inspirations to this day
Because of all that she went through-
My mum is a reminder that "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems" (James Clear)
In other words:
Like her, the achievement of your 2025 goals will rise and fall on the systems and habits that you build around them
That’s why if you really want to thrive in 2025, you’ll:
Create a plan (if you haven’t already)
Stick to the plan (if you already have one)
