How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

Through their video, “If Cinderella were a Guy,” Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo (of Rebelgirls.co) highlight the fact that women are impacted by misogyny as early as childhood

Which, to summarise a previous post, is because of:

This then gives way to confidence issues by the time most girls reach primary or elementary school

(More so than boys)

Which manifests into issues such as imposter syndrome by the time that these girls become women

According to Cate Luzio’s Forbes article, “A Missing Factor in Women’s Leadership: Confidence“:

“The constant second guessing and self-reflection on what we [as women] can or cannot do and our fear of self-promotion has a significant impact on our ability to advance our careers”

She also adds that “although there are various factors missing in women’s leadership, [she] would argue that confidence is one of the most pressing”

One of the things that I love about Mahlah and her 4 sisters (Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah), though, is their show of confidence

If you’re looking for some quarantine viewing, sis, I would really recommend “20 Feet from Stardom” on Netflix

On the surface, it seems like a documentary on the music industry from the vantage point of (legendary) background singers. But, on a deeper level, it’s a really inspiring ensemble piece on grit, purpose and overcoming adversity.

One of my favourite quotes in the programme came from Dr. Mable John (former background singer to Ray Charles as part of The Raelettes):

“We as women need to know our worth. We need to know as women we’re important and I think the breakdown is when a woman doesn’t know who she is, and she settles for less. Check out your worth because you’re worth more than that”

A prime example of how we can carry out this awesome advice in our own lives is demonstrated really clearly in Matthew 21, which tells the story of the origins of Palm Sunday (today)

Lessons from Elisheba on why knowing God is your oath will help you achieve success

Lessons from Elisheba on why knowing God is your oath will help you achieve success

Exodus 6:23 reveals that Moses’ sister-in-law’s name was Elisheba (or Elisheva) which translates as "God is my oath". As women of purpose, this is important to know for 2 main reasons- all of which I shared on my Facebook page this week via the (live) video below.

Lessons from Asenath on how to stop playing small

Lessons from Asenath on how to stop playing small

So last week, lovely, we looked at Asenath and what she has to teach us about how we can forgive ourselves and move forward. She also has loads to teach us about how to stop playing small- - all of which I shared on my Facebook page this week via the (live) video below.

Lessons from Keturah on how to master your craft

Lessons from Keturah on how to master your craft

Did you know that Abraham married another woman after Sarah’s death? Well, according to Genesis 25, her name was Keturah and she went on to have 6 more children for him (aside from Ishmael and Isaac)!

Upon reflecting on both women, though, it seems to me that Abraham’s time with Sarah and Keturah are indicative of two completely different seasons in his life:

  • Keturah= Walking in (the manifestation of) God’s promise; abundance and overflow

  • Sarah= the process that it took to lay hold of that process- a process that involved challenges to faith, work and maturation.

And can I be really transparent with you, lovely? I very much felt like I was in the Sarah phase this week.

This is how I realised that not only are these 2 women symbolic of 2 different seasons in Abraham’s life, they are also symbolic of the path to purpose and what it ultimately takes to master your craft. I elaborated on this and more on my Facebook page this week via the (live) video below.

Lessons from Sarah on How not to Miss God's Blessings

Lessons from Sarah on How not to Miss God's Blessings

So, one of my favourite contemporary gospel songs from back in the day is “Go Get It” by Mary Mary. Not only is it sure to get you dancing, the lyrics are sooo positive! The chorus alone, which encourages us to go for it and “go get [our] blessing,” is and always will be enough to hype me up when it comes to chasing my dreams!

If you’ve been wondering how exactly you can go about getting your blessings (goals and dreams) and making them a reality, then stay tuned! The events of Sarah life demonstrates the answer in these 5 simple steps:

  1. Decide God is faithful

  2. Know that His word will not return to Him void

  3. Mix God’s word with faith

  4. Know that you must do your part to attain the promise (God’s way!)

  5. Practice patience and consistency (until God brings it to pass)

All of which I shared on my Facebook page this week via the (live) video below.

Lessons from Lot's Wife on How to Submit to God

Lessons from Lot's Wife on How to Submit to God

If you’ve been apart of the Far Above Rubies Collective for any length of time, you’ll know that I’m totally obsessed with gifs (this post is probably the most extreme example of that lol). This is because I LOVE to express myself and I just adore how simple yet effective gifs are for adding that extra layer of meaning and/or emotion to my blog posts, emails and even a social media comment or two!

Next to gifs, I love memes. As you’ll know if you’re apart of my Facebook or Instagram communities, I like the inspirational ones and post those most often but I love the funny ones too- so you can imagine my delight when I came across one that said:

We are called to be the salt of the earth; not salty!

a few weeks ago!

In case you’re unsure, the Urban Dictionary defines the term “salty” as “the act of being upset, angry or bitter” and, if we’re honest, the path to purpose can make us feel that way sometimes- especially if it:

  • Changes life as we know it

  • Costs us our relationships or attachments

  • Causes us to relinquish control (of our plans/what we had in mind in favour of God’s)

  • Arouses fear and so on

We see this (and more!) clearly demonstrated in the life of Lot’s Wife via Genesis 19 as her inability to submit to God’s command, not only made her salty as defined above, but literally got her turned into a pillar of salt!

She’s a great example of the fact that, although the gift of free will means that we have the freedom to say “yes” or “no” to God, there are always consequences for either decision- for better or worse. So we need to know how to make the right ones (even when they don’t necessarily align to what we want), all of which I shared on my Facebook page this week via the (live) video below.

Lessons from Hagar on how to stop running away from your calling

Lessons from Hagar on how to stop running away from your calling

If I was to ask you about a person in the Bible who completely took off running when faced with their calling- you'd probably say Jonah, right?

But what if I told you that there was a female who:

  • Lived many years before him

  • Also tried to run from her calling

  • Therefore has much to teach us but is often overlooked due to being overshadowed by her mistress?

Well- if the title of this blog post hasn't given it away yet- there was and her name is Hagar. The events of her life help us to understand:

  • Why we run from our calling in the first place (the root cause)

  • How to stop it so that we can come out of rebellion and live up to our God-given purpose- all of which I shared in the live video below
